Summary: Report presented on 9 April 2019 by the European Commission on the implementation of the strategic action plan on batteries. Further information: In May 2018, the Commission adopted the Strategic Action Plan on Batteries as part of the third ‘Europe on the Move’ mobility package. This brought together a set of measures to support national, regional and industrial efforts to build a battery value chain in Europe, embracing raw materials extraction, sourcing and processing, battery materials, cell production, battery systems, as well as re-use and recycling. Less than a year after its adoption, significant progress has been made on the key actions set out in the Strategic Action Plan and industry has announced several major investments. This report provides the state of play on the main actions undertaken so far across the battery value chain and identifies the challenges and opportunities for the EU in this strategic sector for decarbonising and modernising the economy. The report was presented as part of a package accompanying the Commission's Fourth report on the state of the Energy Union. |
