Summary: Report published by the European Commission on 26 June 2020 concerning the implementation of Directive 2008/56/EC - also known as Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MFSD). Further information: This Directive establishes a common approach and objectives for the prevention, protection and conservation of the marine environment against damaging human activities. It was designed as a response to the pressure exercised over the marine environment and its ecosystems and the impact from human activities. This report is a legal requirement emanating from the MFSD, and it builds upon previously published implementation reports. The document shows that while this framework for marine environmental protection is one of the most comprehensive and ambitious worldwide, it needs to be beefed up to be able to tackle predominant pressures such as overfishing and unsustainable fishing practices, plastic litter, excess nutrients, underwater noise and others types of pollution. |
