Summary: Report published by the European Commission on 20 May 2021 concerning the implementation of Directive 2014/40/EU, also known as the EU Tobacco Products Directive (EU TPD). Further information: Directive 2014/40/EU lays down rules on the manufacture, presentation and sale of cigarettes, roll-your-own tobacco, pipe tobacco, cigars, cigarillos, smokeless tobacco, electronic cigarettes and herbal products for smoking. It aims to improve the functioning of the EU's internal market for tobacco products, whilst assuring a high level of public health. Under Article 28(1) of this Directive, the Commission must submit a report on its application by May 2021. The report shows a steady decrease in smoking rates and tobacco use across the European Union (EU). However, it also points out two main areas where improvements are required: enforcement at national level and better consideration of new market developments. |
