Summary: Report published by the European Commission in December 2018 on progress related to the implementation of the European Union's forest strategy. Further information: The Commission adopted a Communication in 2013 setting up a Forest Strategy for the European Union (EU). The strategy envisages an EU framework to coordinate and ensure coherence in forest-related policies and enhance the contribution of forests and the forest-based sector to EU objectives. Sustainable forest management (SFM), the multifunctional role of forests, resource efficiency and global forest responsibility are its guiding principles. On 7 December 2018, the Commission released a mid-term review of the strategy. This Communication concludes that the strategy is thus far achieving its aims of encouraging sustainable forest management both in the European Union and globally. The Council of the European Union adopted a set of conclusions on this progress report on 15 April 2019. |
