Summary: Report presented on 19 May 2016 by the European Commission on the application of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights in 2015. Further information: The report outlines the initiatives taken in 2015 by the European Union (EU) to strengthen fundamental rights. It also looks at how these rights were applied across a range of EU policies and in the Member States in 2015. The report argues that fundamental rights and the founding values of the European Union (EU) were put to test in 2015. This was due to the consequences of an unprecedented arrival of refugees at its external borders, and a number of security threats. These situations led to questioning on whether the institutions were still able to protect citizens from those challenges. In this context, nationalism, populism and intolerance found a fertile ground to prosper and to advocate exclusion and isolationism as the only way to overcome them. |
