The President of the European Council remarked after the European Council meeting on the 9 March 2017 and the informal meeting of the 27 heads of state and government of 10 March that the discussions about the future of the European Union have been constructive and focused. Subjects discussed on the European Council meeting were the porgress on the migration priorities as set down by leaders in the Malta Declaration of the 3rd of February and the prospects for the EU and euro area economies. Leaders also confirmed the EU's position as the champion of open, rules-based free and fair trade and reviewed progress made in the area of security and defence cooperation. The meeting on the 10 March focused on what should be the main elements of the Rome Declaration and the agenda going forward in regard of the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome. |
