Book abstract:

This book presents a comparative study of health care organisation, medicine and nursing across Europe.

The work is organised over seven chapters, chapter one providing the background to the changing nature of health care provision. Chapter two discusses the relationship between welfare regimes and health systems, including an overview of the European health care systems, their hospital organisation and that of the medical and nursing professions. The following four chapters feature the paired case studies: Netherlands and Sweden - professional accountability and governance; France and the UK - state-professions relations and govern-mentality; Germany and Italy - regionalism versus federalism; Poland and Greece - the role of clientelism and familialism. The final chapter presents conclusions drawn and the implications of any managerial reforms for medicine, nursing and hospitals organisations are summarised.

The work will interest health care professionals and policy researchers in welfare and health care systems.

Mike Dent is Professor of Health Care Organisation at Staffordshire University.
