When an education bill passed the Turkish parliament recently, the government celebrated, but the opposition raised an alarm about the secular educational tradition of the republic being under fire. The law had also been criticized for not being based in sound pedagogical theory and being difficult to implement. The AK Party defended its efforts to bring what it said was limited religious education back into the classroom after an absence of many decades. |
