Summary:Regulation (EU) 2024/897 - adopted by the co-legislators on 13 March 2024 - introducing amendments to Regulation (EU) 2017/2107 and Regulation (EU) 2023/2053. Further information:The EU has been a Contracting Party to theĀ International Convention for the Conservation of Atlantic TunasĀ since 1997. This Convention provides for a framework of regional cooperation on the conservation and management of tunas and tuna-like species in the Atlantic Ocean and the adjoining seas through the setting up of an ICCAT. Regulation (EU) 2017/2107 lays down management, conservation and control measures applicable in the ICCAT Convention. Regulation (EU) 2023/2053 established a multiannual management plan for bluefin tuna in the eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean. These Acts implemented the last ICCAT conservation and enforcement recommendations. Since the adoption of those Acts, ICCAT adopted at its 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022 annual meetings a number of legally binding measures for the conservation of fishery resources under its purview. The main purpose of this Regulation is to implement into EU law the amendments to the conservation and enforcement measures adopted by the ICCAT. The draft law was adopted by the European Commission on 21 April 2022. The plenary of the European Parliament adopted the proposed text on 6 February 2024, followed by the Council of the European Union on 26 February. The Act was signed by the co-legislators on 13 March 2024 and published in the Official Journal on 19 March 2024. |
