Summary: Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 June 2019 setting out a multi-annual plan for the western Mediterranean fisheries exploiting stocks of fish and crustaceans living close to the sea bottom ('demersal fisheries'). Further information: This multiannual plan is the fourth adopted in line with the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). The CFP Regulation establishes the general framework and identifies situations in which the co-legislators are to adopt multiannual plans. This Regulation covers demersal fish stocks, i.e. fish that live and feed at the bottom of the seabed, and aims at addressing high levels of overfishing and the ineffective regulatory framework. The plan covers the western Mediterranean waters, which extend along the Northern Alboran Sea, the Gulf of Lion and the Tyrrhenian Sea, covering the Balearic archipelago and the islands of Corsica and Sardinia, and concerns mainly France, Italy and Spain. The Regulation was proposed on 8 March 2018 by the European Commission. An informal agreement between the co-legislators was reached on 5 February 2019. The European Parliament formally endorsed it on 4 April, followed by the Council of the European Union on 6 June. |
