Summary: On 10 January 2017 the European Commission presented a proposal for a Regulation on the handling of personal data by institutions and other bodies of the European Union. The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union reached an informal agreement on this draft law on 23 May 2018, and the Regulation was adopted on 23 October. Further information: The aim of the proposal is to reform the existing Regulation No 45/2001 and to align it to the 2016 General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The review of this Regulation also takes into account the results of enquiries and stakeholder consultations, and the evaluation study on its application over the previous 15 years. The proposed review was put forward as part of a package of measures on privacy rules for electronic communications, which includes a Communication on exchanging and protecting personal data in a globalised world. |
