Kurt Beck, chairman of Germany’s Social Democrats, advanced the party’s leftward shift, October 2007 as he won leadership backing to reverse a core element of the Agenda 2010 economic reforms introduced by Gerhard Schröder when he was Chancellor.

The overwhelming vote by the party’s executive board ensures Mr Beck’s victory in a bitter power struggle with Franz Müntefering, a former SPD chairman and now vice-chancellor in Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrat-led grand coalition government.
