Abstract:

The collapse of Communism in the Soviet bloc and the end to the Cold War has left the United States as the sole world superpower - which has caused other major powers to re-evaluate their relationship with the US. This is particularly true in the case of the transatlantic security relationship. This book reviews the three main elements of that relationship - the defence of Europe, global challenges and new security threats.

Part one addresses the maintenance of security in Europe. Chapter one looks at the role of the Atlantic Alliance, while chapter two explores the European response to the instabilities and threats to security which might arise in Europe and its immediate borders. The changing nature and composition of NATO is discussed in chapter three, and the future of transatlantic relations is the focus of chapter four.

Part two is concerned with new security challenges outside Europe and the way the transatlantic relationship has responded. Chapters five and six address global challenges affecting both Europe and America, the differing foreign policy stances and the institutional provisions that allow for discussion and co-ordination of policies.

Part three turns to the emerging security challenges. Chapter seven examines the ways in which the United States and Europe have joined together in the fight against international terrorism. Chapter eight focuses on the battle against international crime and drug trafficking, and explores the different attitudes and emphasis given to these problems on both sides of the Atlantic. The work closes with some general conclusions for the development of transatlantic relations in the twenty-first century.

The book will interest scholars and students engaged in politics, security studies and international relations.
