European astronomers are planning to build an optical telescope that is four times bigger than any in existence. European astronomical research is at a critical juncture with the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) project being currently defined by its community through in particular European Southern Observatory (ESO), OPTICON and the ELT Design Study, with a decision to proceed designing the facility to be taken end 2006 / early 2007. |
