Summary: Recommendation - adopted by the European Commission on 26 March 2019 - on a common approach across the European Union (EU) to the security of 5G networks. Further information: The Recommendation features a set of operational steps and measures aimed at ensuring a high level of cybersecurity of 5G networks across the European Union. The adoption of this document followed the support demonstrated by the European Council for a concerted approach to the security of 5G networks. The relevance of 5G networks was also highlighted in a Joint Communication on EU-China relations. The recommendations are a combination of legislative and policy instruments aimed at protecting economies, societies and democratic systems. They include measures at a national level - national risk assessment of 5G network infrastructures - and at EU level - exchange of information and completion of coordinated risk assessment. The European Commission announced on 19 July that most Member States had already submitted their national risk assessments, as per recommended. These would feed into an EU-wide assessment, which was released in October 2019. |
