Racist gangs fought Moscow police in clashes over the weekend of 11-12 December 2010 sparked by the killing of a Russian football fan in an ethnic brawl a few days earlier.

The violence underlined the strength of the ultranationalist movement in Russia, estimated at 70,000, amid calls for armed violence by neo-Nazi leaders.

Subsequently, police detained at least 800 people in Moscow as they launched a security sweep aimed at preventing a spiralling of racial violence in the Russian capital.
