Moroccan soldiers took possession of a tiny disputed islet in the Strait of Gibraltar named Perejil (Parsley Island) on 11 July 2002. The islet is Spanish but Morocco believes it to be part of its territory since independence from France and Spain in 1956. The European Union has issued strong statements defending Spain's rights to Perejil.
