Presidents Vladimir Putin and George W. Bush's final meeting, 6 April 2008, was a commemoration of their personal ties but couldn't paper over entrenched differences on US missile defense plans for central Europe and the role of NATO.

The US and Russia said they were interested in creating a joint defence system with Europe against missile threats - though Russia warned it still opposed plans for a US-run missile shield in central Europe.
