Putin and Renzi discuss ‘potential energy projects’

A statement from the Kremlin unveiled details of a phone call from Italy's prime minister Matteo Renzi to Russia's president Vladimir Putin on 8 January 2016. The two leaders discussed the situation in Syria and potential energy projects between the two countries.

Italy was seen as one of Russia's closest European partners, and had recently risen doubts over the decision to extend the period of sanctions against the country.
