Demonstrations continued in Serbia in April 2017 following the results of a presidential election which had outgoing prime minister Aleksander Vučić as the clear winner.

Protests were based on a perception of unfair and undemocratic dominance of Mr Vučić in the country, together with an overall poor economic and social situation and widespread corruption. Criticism was extended to the pre-election period, seen as biased and poorly reported by national media.

Mr Vučić chose to downgrade the protests and saw them as an example of democratic rule. Media sources in Serbia were also criticised for minimising the importance of these demonstrations.
