Protection of the European Union’s financial interests – fight against fraud. 2016 annual report

The 2016 annual report on the Protection of the European Union’s Financial Interests is presented by the Commission in cooperation with the Member States under Article 325 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU).

The report covers measures taken by the Commission and the Member States in the fight against fraud and presents their results. The Treaty requires close and regular cooperation between Member States and the Commission, and allows specific measures to be taken in order to provide equivalent and effective protection of the EU’s financial interests.

The Commission and the Member States protect the EU’s financial interests from undue or irregular expenditure and from evasion of customs duties or other levies mainly via:
(a)preventive actions;
(b)investigative actions;
(c)corrective mechanisms;
(d)repressive measures.

Where analysis of this information has identified problems or risks, recommendations are made to address those issues.
