Book abstract:

For Poland, due to become a member of the European Union in 2004, the relationship between the EU and the United States is increasingly important. A reflection of this is the fact that the Polish Institute of International Affairs, established in 1996 as a publicly funded institution, recently began systematically monitoring developments in the domain of the EU-US relationship. This book stems from a conference, organised by the institute, held in Warsaw in December 2000 on 'The prospects for the EU-US Relationship' which brought together academics from the University of Texas at Austin and the Centre for Studies of Democracy (a joint project of the University of Oxford and Bologna).

The papers included in the book examine the EU-US relationship from a number of different perspectives. It opens with a discussion of the new transatlantic agenda and goes on to examine issues such as environment and security co-operation, the difference in relations between the EU and the Clinton and Bush administrations, the quest for leadership in Europe and the economic challenge facing an enlarged Europe. The two concluding chapters provide commentaries on the Warsaw Conference itself.

This book will be of use to students of European Studies and American Politics.

In the United Kingdom this book is distributed by Gazelle Book Services.
