On 1 June 2004, the European Health Insurance Card came into circulation. The aim of the card is to simplify procedures for accessing the healthcare system in another Member State. It must be implemented by all EU Member States by December 2005 at the latest. On 16 August 2004, the UK government launched a consultation on the introduction of the card in the UK. Deadline for responses: 28 September 2004.
