Summary:Legislative initiative - adopted by the European Commission on 2 October 2024 - introducing amendments to Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 as regards provisions relating to its date of application. Further information:Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 - also known as the EU Deforestation Law - lays down rules regarding the placing and making available on European Union's (EU) market, as well as the export from the EU of relevant products, that contain, have been fed with or have been made using relevant commodities, with a view to minimising the EU's contribution to deforestation and forest degradation worldwide, and reducing the EU's contribution to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and global biodiversity loss. Most of the provisions of that Regulation were to be applied by the end of December 2024. Operators and traders making available on the market of exporting relevant products are to exercise due diligence in order to prove that the relevant products comply with the requirements of the Regulation. In this context, the European Commission decided to put forward an amendment postponing by 12 months the date of application of the provisions of the EU Deforestation Law to allow Member States, partner countries, operators and traders to be better prepared and for the latter to implement the appropriate systems for due diligence. The draft law was adopted by the European Commission on 2 October 2024. The Council of the European Union endorsed the proposed text on 16 October 2024. |
