Summary: Proposal presented on 14 October 2019 by the European Commission on the signing of a protocol to the ICCAT Convention in order to improve its effectiveness and strengthen the conservation and management of species under its purview. Further information: The International Convention for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT Convention) aims to promote cooperation in maintaining the populations of tuna and tunalike fish in the Atlantic Ocean at levels that permit the maximum sustainable catch for food and other purposes. The European Union became a party to the Convention in 1986. The ICCAT Commission is the body established by the ICCAT Convention for the conservation and management of the species under its purview. From 2013 to 2018, discussions have taken place within the ICCAT Commission on the changes that are needed to the Convention. As a result, a Protocol has been drafted to amend the Convention. The Protocol is due to be adopted by the Contracting Parties at the 28th meeting of the ICCAT Commission in November 2019. |
