The Barcelona Convention for the protection of the marine environment and the coastal region of the Mediterranean aims to ensure the sustainable management of natural marine and land resources and to protect the marine environment and coastal zones, through prevention, reduction and elimination of pollution. The Barcelona Convention entered into force on 9 July 2004.

The Twentieth Ordinary Meeting of the Contracting Parties of the Barcelona Convention will take place from 17 to 20 December 2017 in Tirana, Albania. The Meeting of the Parties will be asked to decide, inter alia, on a proposal to amend Annex II (List of Endangered and Threatened Species) to the Protocol concerning Specially Protected Areas and Biological Diversity in the Mediterranean.

The present proposal concerns the decision establishing the position to be adopted on behalf of the Union concerning the amendments.
