Further information:

As the total number of irregular crossing along the main migratory routes decreased by 63% in 2017, results were shown in the protection of the EU's external border, the cooperation with partner countries to tackle the root causes of irregular migration, the improvement of the protection of migrants and the fight against smugglers.

The report highlights the need for the EU, Member States and partner countries to advance in parallel and to maintain the intensity of the EU's efforts on all fronts.

Background information:

The European Union experienced since 2015 the largest number of arrivals of refugees and migrants since the end of the Second World War. The EU and its Member States were not sufficiently prepared to respond effectively, which caused a powerful impact across the region. The integrity of both the Common European Asylum System and of the Schengen area of free movement for European citizens was put into question.

In April 2015, the European Commission put forward its 'Ten point action plan on migration', followed by a comprehensive European Agenda on Migration on 13 May to address both immediate challenges and the structural weaknesses of the existing EU migration and asylum policy.
