Summary: 1994 reform of the Structural Funds and Community initiatives - putting equal opportunities into practice. Since the entry into force in 1987 of the Single European Act (SEA), which incorporates a series of amendments to the Treaties of Rome, the European Union has not only committed itself to completing the 1992 Single Market, but has also confirmed its goal of reinforcing economic and social cohesion. This means evening out disparities in the degree of economic development of the various regions and closing the gap between the Community's least favoured regions and the rest. These actions are finances from the three Structural Funds: the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Guidance Section of the European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund (EAGGF). |
