Prodi to offer EU carrot if Turkey helps Cyprus unite

Preview of a visit to Turkey on 15-16 January 2004 by Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission. During his visit Mr Prodi was expected to praise the changes undertaken by the Turkish government to meet the European Union accession criteria and to call for the continuation and implementation of these reforms. Mr Prodi was also expected to urge the Turkish Government to put pressure on Turkish Cypriots to agree a settlement in Cyprus before the divided island joins the EU on 1 May 2004.
