Two attackers killed a priest and seriously wounded at least one other hostage in a church in northern France on the 26 July 2016 before they were shot dead by police. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack. President Hollande paid an immediate on-the-spot visit, accompanied by Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve. He said 'We’re facing a tragedy, yet another one, because the threat is very high. It remains very high after everything we’ve lived through in recent days and even recent years. We’re up against a group, Daesh, which has declared war on us. We must wage this war by every means, with due respect for the law, which makes us a democracy'. The French Council of the Muslim Faith (Conseil français du culte musulman or CFCM) denounced the attack as a 'terrifying and horrifying act' and expressed its solidarity with 'all Catholics of France'. On the 27 July 2016 President Hollande convened a meeting of the Conference of Religious Leaders of France. 'We cannot allow ourselves to be dragged into the politics of Daech (Islamic State), which wants to set the children of the same family against each other', the Archbishop of Paris, Cardinal André Vingt-Trois, told journalists after the meeting at the Elysee presidential palace. He was flanked by representatives of other Christian denominations as well as Jewish, Muslim and Buddhist leaders. Muslims attended Catholic Mass in a number of cities and towns across France on Sunday 31 July 2016 in a show of solidarity. The attack took place less than two weeks after the 14 July 2016 Bastille Day massacre in Nice in which more than 80 people were killed. |
