Press Release:Commission approves UK regional aid map

The European Commission approved on the 26 July 2000 the regional aid map for the United Kingdom for the period 2000-2006. The approval will enable the UK authorities to provide financial assistance for business investment in eligible areas until 31 December 2006. 28.7% of the population of Great Britain and the whole population of Northern Ireland live in eligible areas. The examination of the UK regional aid map was part of a wider exercise to review regional aid systems in all Member States in order to adapt them to the progress of economic development and in order to reduce the overall coverage of regional aid in the Union.
