The European Commission on 1 May 2005 launched a new set of local information outlets called the 'EUROPE DIRECT Information Network'. The network, about 400 centres spread throughout the European Union, took over from the Info-Points Europe and Carrefours, which traditionally provided the public with facts and figures on EU-related matters to urban and rural areas respectively. Europe Direct outlets offer a range of services, including guides to EU law, programmes and policies, treaty texts, a public feedback mechanism and a freephone to the EUROPE DIRECT centre on 00800 6 7 8 9 10 11. Many also provide a TV showing 'Europe by Satellite', enabling the public to keep abreast of the latest EU news as it happens. The relays are typically chambers of commerce or local authorities. |
