Press Release: Tax discrimination: Commission takes Greece to the Court of Justice

On 14.3.00, the European Commission decided to refer Greece to the Court of Justice over a tax provision discriminating against European citizens of non-Greek nationality buying property with foreign currency. The Commission considers the preferential tax rate on property transfers granted only to Greek nationals to be contrary to the fundamental principle of the European Union that prohibits discrimination on grounds of nationality (Article 12 of the EC Treaty).
