Press Release: Summary of remarks to the press by Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the CFSP, in Afghanistan on 21 July 2009

Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), today (21.7.09)
visited Afghanistan. His trip to Afghanistan takes place at an important moment, just a few weeks before the
presidential elections to be held on 20 August. In Kabul, the High Representative met President Hamid Karzai, Foreign Minister Rangin Dadfar Spanta and Interior Minister Mohammad Hanif Atmar, as well as several candidates running for the presidential elections. Mr Solana also met Kai Eide, UN Secretary-General Special
Representative for Afghanistan, and visited the headquarters of the European Union Police Mission
to Afghanistan (EUPOL Afghanistan).
