On 19 March 2001 Anna Diamantopoulou, Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs, wrote to the social partners at European level in order to advance the process of consultation on modernisation and improvement of labour relations set in motion on 20 June 2000. The Commission wishes to focus consultations on teleworking and has submitted a set of proposed guidelines to form the practical framework for this kind of work. It is now up to the two sides - management and labour - to respond and let the Commission know whether they wish to start formal negotiations on the basis of the proposal. As the Commission stressed in its contribution at the Stockholm European Council, the social partners are the key players when it comes to modernising labour relations. |
