Statement by the European Commissioner for Budget, Michaele Schreyer, on civil action against Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds, made on 18 July 2001. The US District Court for the Eastern District of New York had dismissed, on 17 July 2001, the claim brought by the European Community for loss and damages suffered to its budget through smuggling of cigarettes, which it says is organised by certain tobacco companies.
