European Commission President Romano Prodi and European Commissioner for External Relations Chris Patten stated on 6 June 2000 that the Commission was delighted by the announcement of 6 June 2000 by the Ukrainian authorities of the closure of the Chernobyl nuclear power station in December 2000. They went on to say that the timing was in line with Ukraine's long-standing commitment with the G7 and the European Union and it was a significant breakthrough that would be widely welcomed by the international community as a whole. |
