June 29, 2004 marks the ten-year anniversary of the signing of the Sofia Convention on cooperation for the protection and sustainable use of the Danube river, a multilateral legal instrument that settles the activities for the protection of the environment and of water management in the Danube basin. Romania acts as depositary of this important Convention which came in force on October 22, 1998. Joining together the 12 states located in the Danube hydrographic basin, the document was signed by the European Commission on behalf of the European Community. The Contracting Parties to the Sofia Convention set the grounds of the Vienna-based International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR), which coordinates the activities carried out on the basis of the Convention's provisions |
