The European Parliament's environment committee warned on 24 June 2015 against the European Commission's 'weak' response to 'Right2Water', the first EU citizens' initiative petition (ECI). The committee's members considered that it could discredit the ECI system, as it lacked 'any real ambition and failed to meet the demands of the organizers'. Such message was reinforced during a plenary session of the EP on 8 September 2015. ECIs enable citizens to ask the EC to propose laws in areas within its competence, if they can muster at least one million signatures from at least a quarter of EU member states. |
