Press Release: Pharmaceuticals: Liikanen meets key stakeholders for a hard look at competitiveness of EU pharmaceutical industry

On 11.12.00, Erkki Liikanen, European Commissioner for Enterprise and the Information Society, met representatives of the European pharmaceuticals industry in Brussels to discuss competitiveness issues. Growing signs of a 'competitiveness gap' between the EU and US-based parts of this industry have for some time been steadily rising up the agenda of both industry representatives and the Commission, which decided, earlier in the year 2000, to ask a team of experts to examine the situation. Their published report represents the views of the consultants, and not that of the Commission. Ministers and Industry Chief executives were invited, along with MEPs and patient organisations, to discuss the problem and look for a solution.
