Press Release: Opening of consultations with the ACP side on the Islamic Republic of Mauritania under Article 96 of the Cotonou Agreement, Paris, 20 October 2008. Conclusions of the European Union

The European Union considers that the coup d'etat which occurred in Mauritania on 6 August 2008 is a serious violation of the essential elements contained in Article 9 of the Cotonou Agreement. Under Article 96 of the Agreement, it has engaged in a political dialogue with those currently in power, which has led to the opening of consultations in order to carry out an analysis of the situation and examine the possible solutions for a rapid
return to constitutional order.
