GALILEO The European Commission announced on 9.12.99 its agreement to the launching of four important research contracts under the Fifth Framework Programme for research and development, which will allow the necessary technical and industrial studies for the definition phase of GALILEO, the European contribution to a global satellite navigation system under civil control. GALILEO should complement and improve existing dual use systems such as GPS (the US global satellite navigation system) and GLONASS (the Russian satellite navigation system), and is considered to be a key element in the future of trans-European networks. |
