Two new financial instruments that aim to encourage greater private sector involvement in schemes that contribute to the twin climate priorities of reducing energy use and conserving natural capital, especially biodiversity, in Europe were launched on 16 February 2015. These tools were the Private Finance for Energy Efficiency and the Natural Capital Financing Facility. The European Investment Bank and the European Commission joined forces to back investment through these two initiatives that support Europe’s contribution to achieving global energy, climate and environmental goals. European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Cañete, stated that a similar approach would be used to encourage private investment across the planned Energy Union, while it would also be central to the EU’s flagship Investment Plan. |
