Press Release: Mergers: Commission opens in-depth investigation into Cargill’s take-over of Degussa’s food ingredients business

The European Commission on 14 December 2005 opened an in-depth investigation under the EU Merger Regulation into the planned acquisition by the US-based Cargill group of the food ingredients business of the German company Degussa AG. The Commission’s initial market investigation had found that the proposed acquisition could create competition problems in the markets for lecithin, a natural emulsifier primarily used in food production.
