The European Commission on 29 July 2005 cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of the shipping company Royal P&O Nedlloyd (PONL) by AP Møller-Maersk A/S (Maersk). The Commission's clearance was conditional upon the divestiture of PONL's business on the trade between Europe and South Africa and the withdrawal of PONL from several conferences and consortia. In light of the commitments, the Commission concluded that the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) or any part of it.
