The European Commission on 31 March 2006 cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the creation of a joint venture between the two Japanese companies Sony and NEC for the development, design and marketing of optical data-storage disk drives. The European Commission concluded that the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) or any substantial part of it. Sony and NEC were planning to create a joint venture in the sector of optical data-storage disk drives (ODD), which was to include CD- and DVD-drives with read and write functions, primarily for computers. |
