The European Parliament's plenary session endorsed on 8 March 2016 several measures to prevent and halt outbreaks of animal diseases such as avian flu or foot and mouth disease. The rules had been informally agreed between the parliament and the Council of the European Union.

The draft law puts fresh emphasis on prevention and should also help professionals to keep pace with scientific progress.
