The European Parliament approved a resolution on 20 May 2015 it which it pressed the European Commission not to withdraw a draft EU directive on maternity leave, despite four years’ deadlock over it in the Council of the European Union.

MEPs also urged the ministers to resume talks and agree an official position.

In a letter sent to the European Parliament president Martin Schulz in June 2015, European Commission's vice-president Frans Timmermans revealed that the deadlocked draft law regarding maternity leave would be ditched, should a new revised effort to bring member states into an agreement be unsuccessful.
