The leader of the Labour Party in Ireland, Eamon Gilmore, told the National Forum On Europe, on 7 February 2008, that his party believed that all members of the Irish Labour Movement and the broader Irish left should vote Yes in the forthcoming referendum on the Treaty of Lisbon. Mr Gilmore was leading a debate on the Treaty at a plenary session of the National Forum on Europe in Dublin Castle, during which Forum Members from all the political parties and leading civil society groups spoke for and against the Treaty. The Irish Government announced, on 9 April 2009, that it had decided to close the National Forum on Europe. The purpose of the Forum, which was launched in October 2001, had been to promote public debate on the EU, its enlargement, its future and Ireland's place in it. |
