Press Release: Joe Borg visits Mauritania

European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Joe Borg will arrive in Mauritania on 5 April, 2008, for a one-day visit to meet political leaders and fisheries stakeholders. This trip follows the initialling of a revised protocol under the Fisheries Partnership Agreement between Mauritania and the EU which was finalised on 14 March. The new protocol aims to better meet Mauritania's needs for the sustainable development of the national fisheries sector, while also reflecting changes in the composition of the European fleet operating in Mauritanian waters. During his visit, Commissioner Borg will be able to see the positive impact of this major agreement on the Mauritanian economy first hand, and reaffirm the EU's commitment to a long-term partnership which will support not only the Mauritanian fisheries sector, but the development of the national economy as a whole.
